This master's thesis explores the portrayal of terror and terrorism in social studies textbooks for middle school students from 1997 to the present day. Terror and terrorism are topics that receive a lot of global attention. Many teachers frequently use textbooks in their teaching, and thus the content of these textbooks can influence students' understanding of the topics (Koritzinsky, 2014, p. 231). By examining how these concepts are presented in textbooks, we can gain insight into the perspectives being conveyed to students. To address the research question, we use the curricula that the selected textbooks are based on, namely L97, LK06, and LK20. The inclusion of these curricula is justified by their influence on the content of the textbooks.
We aim to answer the thesis's research question using qualitative methods and hermeneutics as both a scientific theoretical perspective and a method. The selected textbooks are further analyzed and discussed using relevant theory. The theoretical framework for the thesis consists of theoretical perspectives on the concepts of terror and terrorism, as well as previous research related to the topic.
The main findings of the thesis are that the portrayal of the concept of terror in textbooks has changed significantly. This indicates a shift where the concept of terror has evolved from being depicted as state terrorism to being characterized by a non-state portrayal, such as Islamist terrorism and right-wing extremism. The development in the portrayal of the concept of terror appears to have shifted from a historical representation to a more moral one. Additionally, the topic has gained much more prominence in textbooks associated with LK20 compared to L97 and LK06. Another observation is that textbooks associated with LK20 seem to contain a type of dualism, where terror is depicted as evil, and democracy is portrayed as good. Terror can appear to serve as an example of what democracy does not entail and can be prevented by promoting democratic values and citizenship.
