This master's thesis explores the portrayal of terror and terrorism in social studiestextbooks for middle school students from 1997 to the present day. Terror and terrorismare topics that receive a lot of global attention. Many teachers frequently use textbooksin their teaching, and thus the content of these textbooks can influence students'understanding of the topics (Koritzinsky, 2014, p. 231). By examining how theseconcepts are presented in textbooks, we can gain insight into the perspectives beingconveyed to students. To address the research question, we use the curricula that theselected textbooks are based on, namely L97, LK06, and LK20. The inclusion of thesecurricula is justified by their influence on the content of the textbooks.
We aim to answer the thesis's research question using qualitative methods andhermeneutics as both a scientific theoretical perspective and a method. The selectedtextbooks are further analyzed and discussed using relevant theory. The theoreticalframework for the thesis consists of theoretical perspectives on the concepts of terrorand terrorism, as well as previous research related to the topic.
The main findings of the thesis are that the portrayal of the concept of terror intextbooks has changed significantly. This indicates a shift where the concept of terrorhas evolved from being depicted as state terrorism to being characterized by a non-stateportrayal, such as Islamist terrorism and right-wing extremism. The development in theportrayal of the concept of terror appears to have shifted from a historical representationto a more moral one. Additionally, the topic has gained much more prominence intextbooks associated with LK20 compared to L97 and LK06. Another observation is thattextbooks associated with LK20 seem to contain a type of dualism, where terror isdepicted as evil, and democracy is portrayed as good. Terror can appear to serve as anexample of what democracy does not entail and can be prevented by promotingdemocratic values and citizenship.
