In 2020, it was decided that Elsa Laula Renberg would be honored with her own place in Trondheim municipality has, along with other relevant organizations and stakeholders, worked on the design and decoration of this urban space. The project is still under development, and it remains to be seen what the results will be. This master´s thesis presents an investigation of the Norwegianization policy, Elsa Laula Renberg, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission´s report, alongside the data I have collected.
The research question in this study is: “What is the background for Elsa Laula Renbergs plass/Elsa Laula Renbergen sijjie in Trondheim, and what are the objectives of Trondheim municipality for this urban space?”. This study is grounded in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission´s report, with historical awareness being a central concept in the analysis. Additional theoretical framework selected for this study include use of history, identity, historical culture, and memory. To adequately address the research question, I formulated two research sub-questions: What is the commemorative cultural context of Elsa Laula Renbergs plass/Elsa Laula Renbergen sijjie? How can the site contribute to the increased awareness of Sami history, identity, and cultural heritage? These questions have been crucial in structuring the analysis and answering the main research question.
This is a qualitative study, and the methods I have chosen for this thesis are document analysis and three focused interviews. The document analysis was concluded on archival material provided by Trondheim municipality, serving as secondary or supplementary data. I conducted interviews with three informants from Trondheim municipality, all of whom are anonymized. Two of these informants were interviewed together. The final informant, who is not anonymized in this study, represents the Sami community in Trondheim.
