In this bachelor’s thesis, ironic utterances in digital written communication are examined, with particular focus on how the use of emojis affects the intended content. Various linguistic perspectives, such as cognitive pragmatics and sociolinguistics, are fields that the thesis touches upon. Central to the study of irony is Deirdre Wilson and Dan Sperber's relevance theory, which is used as an analytical framework for the thesis. The text addresses and analyzes three concrete examples of irony in digital written communication. These examples aim to illustrate how spontaneous digital utterances from messaging exchanges in chatting can manifest, with youth culture as the focus group. Essential to the thesis is to highlight how there exist cues in digital communication that replace multimodal aspects in face-to-face interactions. This includes focusing on the function of emojis and investigating possible complications related to their use.
