This master thesis aims to investigate how artificial intelligence affects contentproduction in the communications industry, and which ethical issues the technologyraises. The assignment looks at relevant theory around the socio-technicalperspective on technology and whether artificial intelligence can be considered anincremental or disruptive change in the communications industry.
Artificial intelligence can be considered a disruptive technology that radically changes the communication industry. Technology has already replaced specific work tasks, and as development progresses, even more work tasks will probably be delegated further. Communication workers have already integrated artificial intelligence into everyday work, and it has proven to be an effective tool that can contribute to idea generation, text production, and content production for social media. Despite this, not all tasks are delegated to artificial intelligence; there is still a desire for human approval of content to be published. This can be seen in the context that artificial intelligence must deliver better results over a long period for the technology to be trusted entirely. One of the biggest challenges with artificial intelligence is uncritical use. Therefore, the communications industry can benefit from creating industry standards and guidelines to ensure the ethical use of artificial intelligence. The new EU legislation, the AI ACT, will play an essential role in the future, as it is seen that there will be a need to label content generated by artificial intelligence.
