Title: "Use of alternative and supplementary communication (AAC) in everyday life for adults with intellectual disabilities and communication difficulties"
Introduction: People with intellectual disabilities often have difficulties with communication, and alternative and supplementary communication are strategies that support communication. AAC users are a heterogeneous group and have different degrees of severity in relation to their communication difficulties. For these people, the social educator is a profession that often assists with facilitation and mapping so that they can meet their need for communication.
Purpose: The purpose is to give the social educator increased knowledge and awareness of the opportunities AAC provides for people with developmental disabilities and communication difficulties, to better facilitate for people with a need for AAC in their everyday lives.
Method: This is a literature review where five peer-reviewed articles and other literature are the basis for elucidating the research question.
Results: The study shows the importance of facilitating AAC in everyday life, as the user experiences through a communication aid that they get the opportunity to communicate, greater self-determination and predictability in everyday life. These are factors that the social educator experiences as a "win-win" situation, as this makes both our everyday life and the user's better. The social educator has an important role as a communication partner and facilitating the communication process so that the user is understood is essential. By facilitating increased competence, awareness, cooperation and information flow in the staff group, this will result in staff using the communication aid equally and that health personnel identify people with a need for AAC, as there is an unmet need for AAC. The management has an important task here in ensuring that the staff receive the training they should, set aside time and that the staff group agrees and sees the benefit of AAC.
Conclusion: The social educator has an important role in facilitating AAC in everyday life for people with developmental disabilities and communication difficulties. This is especially with regard to knowledge of the user's needs and resources, mapping skills and knowledge of the user's rights. For a successful use of AAC, both AAC user, communication partner and environmental factors are variables that a social educator must facilitate.
