Introduction/background: Research shows that trauma is a major societal problem, affecting social, economic and cultural parts of life. Due to the large incidence of trauma, it is necessary that all healthcare personnel have competence and use trauma-informed care, not just some of the professional groups. Trauma-informed care is a form of milieu therapy that takes particular account of the patient's history and resources, and is therefore an important nursing tool when dealing with this patient group.
Purpose: The purpose is to investigate aspects which can help healthcare personnel to implement and adopt trauma-informed care in their everyday work, with a focus on psychiatric patients who are undergoing clinical treatment.
Method: Literature study is used as the method, and five peer-reviewed research articles are included and quality assured using various checklists.
Result: The analysis resulted in five themes, of which the two most relevant themes were converted into main themes. These main themes were "obstacles" and "facilitating increased TIC". "Obstacles" were further divided into three sub-themes, "organisational obstacles", "obstacles related to education" and "obstacles related to attitudes".
Conclusion: The bachelor's thesis concluded that an increased need to highlight and counteract obstacles related to TIC is necessary. Furthermore, it was concluded that the findings showed motivation and desire from healthcare personnel to use TIC. Future research should focus on the ways in which awareness of TIC and trauma can be raised, how TIC can be implemented in professional practice, and the effect of counteracting the obstacles. Finally, it may be useful to have Norwegian-focused research on the topic.
