Intralingual Shifts in the Translation of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time into American English

Abstract

Dette forskningsprosjektet undersøler intralinguale endringer i Mark Haddons roman, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, med spesifikk analyse av forskjeller mellom de britiske og amerikanske utgavene av boken. Studien fokuserer på endringer funnet i de første 100 sidene av romanen, og bruker oversettelsesteorier for å forstå hvordan språkvariasjoner tilpasses. Forskningen benyttere metode fra Jakobsen, Vinay og Darbelnet, Toury, Aixelá og Venuti, samt en rekke empiriske studier, for å belyse nyanser i oversettelse og bidra til bredre oversettelesstudier innen intralingual oversettelse. De observerte endringene samsvarer med teorier om dialketal INTRA og understreker viktigheten av språklig sammenheng i oversettelsespraksis.

This research project examines intralingual shifts in Mark Haddon’s novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, specifically analyzing differences between the British and American editions of publish. The study focuses on shifts found in the first 100 pages of the novel, utilizing translation theories to understand how language variations are adapted. The research uses methodologies from Jakobsen, Vinay and Darbelnet, Toury, Aixelá and Venuti, as well as a handful of empirical studies, to help highlight nuances of translation and contribute to broader translation studies, in intralingual translation. The shifts observed align with theories of dialectal INTRA and emphasize the importance of linguistic coherence in translation practices.
