Ytterligere studier om FBT og dens tilpasning til ulike familiestrukturer og hvordan familier erfarer FBT kan være nødvendig. dc.description.abstractAbstract Background The Norwegian Directorate of Health recommends family-based therapy (FBT) as a treatment method for children and adolescents with eating disorders. FBT is an outpatient treatment where the parents are givens responsibility for ensuring the child´s food intake. Little research has been done on how FBT affects family life among families in Norway. Purpose The aim was to examine parents´ experiences with FBT. Including getting an insight into what parents feel that FBT can have on their family life, and how parents become involved in FBT. Method The study has a qualitative design. The data material consists of semi-structured interviews with four parents of children and adolescents with eating disorders. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interviews. Results Four main themes were identified from the parents’ descriptions and experiences: 1) FBT is not suitable for all families and is not adapted based on the family´s composition and needs, 2) Parents experience a lack of security in cooperation with BUP, 3) The family´s experience of completing the FBT treatment and 4) Factors that could contribute to increased security for the families who carry out FBT. Conclusion The study revealed that parents of children with eating disorders who receive FBT faced several challenges. They found that course of treatment was demanding for the whole family. For the family to experience FBT comprehensibly, it could depend on how the families understood the eating disorder, and the knowledge they received. How the families managed the treatment could be influenced by the family structure, the guidance from BUP and the family relations. For the families to experience meaning, social belonging in various arenas could be important. Further studies om FBT and its adaptation to different family structures and how families experience FBT may be necessary.
