El simbolismo animal y la deconstrucción de los binarios antropocéntricos en El matrimonio de los peces rojos de Guadalupe Nettel

Abstract

I denne oppgaven undersøker vi de litterære og narrative funksjonene til dyrene i El matrimonio de los peces rojos (Natural Histories), en novellesamling av Guadalupe Nettel. Vi mener at, selv om de annet-enn-menneskelige karakterene i novellene har en klar symbolsk funskjon, for eksempel allegori eller narrativ frampek, utvikler Nettel en dypere refleksjon rundt vårt forhold til dyr i løpet av samlingen. Vi foreslår at måten dyrene karateriseres på i novellene dekonstuerer den binære divisjonen mellom mennesker og dyr, og stiller dermed spørsmål ved den vestlige antropocentrismen. I den første delen av oppgaven, kommer vi til å gjennomføre en litterær analyse av to av novellene, “El matrimonio de los peces rojos” (“The Marriage of the Red Fish”) og “La serpiente de Beijín” (“The Snake from Beijing”) med hovedfokus på dyrenes symbolske betydning. I del to, diskuterer vi, i mer detalj, rollen til dyrene i novellesamlingen i sin helhet, med ideer fra posthumanismen og økokritikken som bakgrunn for diskusjonen.

This article explores the literary and narrative functions of the animal characters in Natural Histories, an anthology of short stories by Guadalupe Nettel. We argue that, although the other-than-human characters have a clear symbolic function in each of the stories, such as establishing allegory or foreshadowing, Nettel develops a more profound reflection about our relationship with animals over the course of the collection as a whole. We propose that the way in which the animals are characterised in the anthology deconstructs the binary division between the human and the animal, in this manner questioning western anthropocentrism. In the first part, we will conduct a literary analysis of two of the stories, “El matrimonio de los peces rojos” (“The Marriage of the Red Fish”) and “La serpiente de Beijín” (“The Snake from Beijing”), focusing primarily on animal symbolism. In the second part, we will discuss in more depth the role of animals in the anthology as a whole, drawing from the ideas of posthumanism and ecocriticism.
