Volver i vikingtid. Tolkninger av en volvegrav på Kaupang i Skiringssal

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven er en litteraturstudie som tar for seg en volvegrav fra Kaupang, og drøfter hvordan ulike aspekter av denne graven har blitt brukt i tolkningen av den gravlagte som volve. Oppgaven gir en innføring i tidligere undersøkelser på Kaupang og på graven, før en redegjørelse av volver og seid i vikingtid, med vekt på mytologisk bakgrunn, seid og kjønn og volvenes utseende og praksis. Videre drøftes problemstillingen, hvor de ulike funnene fra graven og hvordan disse er tolket som faktorer som tilsier at den gravlagte er en volve, blir undersøkt. De ulike faktorene er blant annet den gravlagtes klesdrakt, personlig utstyr som volvestaven, og faktum at hun var begravet sittende. Til slutt oppsummeres drøftingen.

This bachelor's thesis is a literature study that deals with the grave of a volva from Kaupang, and discusses how various aspects of this tomb have been used in the interpretation of the person buried as a volva. The assignment provides an introduction to previous investigations at Kaupang and on the grave, before an account of volvas and seid in the Viking Age, with emphasis on mythological background, seid and gender and the appearance and practice of the volvas. Furthermore, the issue is discussed, where the various finds from the grave and how these are interpreted as factors indicating that the buried person is a volva are examined. The various factors include the buried person's clothing, personal equipment such as the volva staff, and the fact that she was buried sitting up. Finally, the discussion is summarized.
