Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) develop social, school-related, emotional, behavioural and mental challenges more often than the rest of the population (Lundström et al., 2011; Ottem & Lian, 2008; Saito et al., 2017). Studies indicate that people who exhibit challenging behaviour have a greater chance of being excluded from various environments, including regular schooling situations (Emam & Farrell, 2009; Flynn & Lo, 2015; Ogden, 2018; Buescher et al., 2014; Tsiouris et al., 2011). Is this linked to linguistic and communication difficulties which are often associated with autism spectrum disorder? This research project takes a phenomenological-hermeneutic scientific position, with the aim of illuminating and understanding the connection between linguistic and communication challenges and challenging behaviour in individuals with ASD. In a general understanding of the subject, light is also shed on this topic in relation to environmental factors in the child’s developmental environment. The central purpose is quality development of special education services, which stimulate improvement of the conditions for children and young adults with special needs, as well as providing them with an environment which promotes learning, development, mental health and life skills. Based on this, the topic of this thesis is “how can linguistic and communication difficulties trigger challenging behaviour in individuals with autism spectrum disorders?” In order to limit the reach of this project, three research questions were formulated, with the goal of directing attention towards the participants’ experience of challenging behaviour in individuals with ASD, and how to prevent challenging behaviour and maintain cooperation when the child lacks a functioning language or forms of communication. The basis for this study consists of four qualitative research interviews of three parents, and two special educators working at special education facilities. In addition, participant observations were made of two children during their stay at a relief housing facility. Because the selection of subjects for this thesis is rather small, it was especially important to choose participants who provided relevant data for analysis, and thus made it possible to address the research questions. It can be assumed that a broader selection of participants and data collection methods would provide a deeper understanding of the relevant phenomenon, in addition to better ensuring validity, reliability, and transferability. In this research thesis, an attempt has been made to provide thick descriptions of the research topic and the participants’ actions and perceptions in light of theoretical perspectives and similar research, with the aim that the reader may recognise the experiences of the participants. The findings indicate that challenging behaviour in individuals with ASD must be viewed in context with diagnostic traits, comorbidity and environmental factors. While some challenging behaviours can be linked to central traits of ASD – difficulties in social interaction and communication, executive functions, overselectivity, sensory processing sensitivity, and linguistic and communication difficulties –this thesis concludes that factors in the child’s developmental environment can especially be linked to perception and prevention of challenging behaviours. This especially relates to giving the children tools for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and accommodations so that these tools are consistently available in an AAC compliant schooling environment where diversity is seen as a resource. In addition, the educational opportunities available to the children are reliant on the competency of their caregivers, cooperative relations between different micro systems, local and state guidelines, and dedication to the work.
