We are building quicker than we manage to rebuild the earth. Norway's largest mainland industry must take action to use resources in a sustainable way. Change is needed, and it is needed now. Digitization is an accelerator to drive the industry into a zero-emission society. The digital everyday life is here to stay, and it is time for the construction industry to acquire knowledge about and implement strategies for optimal use of digital tools. This thesis links digitization and sustainability together, and looks at the potential for faster development in both areas. Digitization contributes to a strengthened information base that provides sustainable development. This connection has been researched and explained through the thesis. How digitization can increase reuse of materials in the construction industry is researched in this thesis. Opportunities for reuse and what barriers stand in the way of increasing the degree of reuse is researched. Information management is a central part of digitization, and with high requirements for documentation of materials its highly needed. The framework that evaluates people, process and technology has been introduced to investigate why the construction industry is one of the least innovative industries in Norway. Process and knowledge are seen as critical factors for the introduction of new technology. Document analysis, literature study and case study have set the knowledge base for the research. Findings in this study have resulted in measures for private and public companies. Changes in the construction industry are encouraged in order to achieve a more sustainable industry through digitization. The findings show that: (1) When introducing new technology, a change strategy must be prepared and followed up that makes companies receptive to new technological solutions. Here the process and people must be central. (2) Higher taxes and fees should be introduced for the use of virgin materials, and increased profits for construction projects that include a long service life for the buildings and materials. (3) Changes must be made to current legislation so that it becomes more economically profitable and easier to reuse materials and choose innovative solutions for projects. (4) The industry needs increased focus on information sharing and motivation for collaboration across companies and organizations. (5) There should be stricter requirements for documentation of and responsibility for long-term quality, continuous maintenance and renovation of buildings for developers. Further work is encouraged to investigate how the construction industry can go from the highest economic profitability of new construction to value creation through rehabilitation. The existing building stock has a higher value potential than what is considered today. Circular economy, reuse and preservation will be central in the years ahead, where digitization can increase the possibility of success with a more viable industry.
