This master thesis is a study of the teaching material series Ny i Norge, through four revisions from 1977 to 2013, with pronunciation as the main focus. The content on pronunciation in textbooks and teacher guides has been examined and compared to what the current curriculums aimed for, and to the status of second language research in the given time periods. By doing this analysis we get a critical perspective on the pronunciation view in curriculums for adult second language learners of Norwegian - how they should learn Norwegian, and how good their pronunciation should be. We also see a picture of the historical perspective on pronunciation, how it has been considered, and how the research on pronunciation has changed over the last 40 years. Just as the second language research in the seventies, did the first edition of Ny i Norge focus on drill exercises, where the teacher says a word or a sentence, and the students repeat. From the second edition we got a shift towards meaningful communication, and a focus on the purpose of the class. This examination has been done by combining qualitative and quantitative studies of the teaching materials, by analysing what is written about pronunciation in the different issues, and by counting the number of pages and calculating percentages of pronunciation related content in the different books. The findings show that Ny i Norge had a good share on pronunciation in the 2. edition, and that the content was well up to date with the current research at the time. It was on the contrary ahead of the current curriculums. In the later editions the pronunciation content has not been notably updated.
