This thesis is about the transformation area at Flotmyr in Haugesund, and is based on the theory of compact urban development, based on public, municipal planning. Since the 1990s, urban development has gone from being characterized by decentralization to a more dense urban form. The public debate in urban development in recent decades has been largely about climate-reducing measures such as reducing car traffic and getting more people to use public transport. The debate also addresses the population increase many Norwegian cities have experienced, and how the cities can handle population growth in a sustainable way. Theories about densification, compact urban development and sustainability are therefore relevant in today's climate, and are also topics that will be explored in this thesis. The aim of the thesis is to find out which urban form Flotmyr represents, and whether the area and the municipality can handle the challenges that arise when integrating a new district with an existing city center, especially with a possibly unflattering main road that separates the transformation area from the city center. To answer the questions, a qualitative case study has been used as a method, with both document analysis and individual interviews at the base. Different actors in different roles have been interviewed. The findings in the thesis show that the area form for Flotmyr represents a densified urban space, and also shows how the area regulation has been prepared to satisfy the current requirements for densification and sustainable development. Finally, the thesis will show that it is difficult to determine whether Flotmyr can become an integral part of the city, with four lane road as a barrier.
