This master’s thesis report was written based on the master specialization project TPG4560. Some of the theoretical parts were taken from the specialization project and the references were added to the used parts. To reach the main aim of the thesis, some laboratory experiments were conducted in SINTEF laboratory. The required chemical additivities were provided from both NTNU and SINTEF laboratories. Obtained results and graphs were added in the Experiment section. The main objective of this thesis is to compare the different types of drilling fluids used in HPHT and geothermal wells in terms of the wellbore stability, formation damage, pressure and temperature compatibility and tolerance, changes during connections and especially mud rheology. Due to high pressure and temperature, oil and gas HPHT wells are very similar to the geothermal wells, however some of the drilling fluids used in drilling these different types of wells are different from each other, because, geothermal industry is environmentally friendly industry, and it is, therefore, prohibited to use oil/synthetic base mud for drilling operation, unlike oil and gas HPHT wells. In order to make a clear comparison, drilling fluids used in HPHT and geothermal wells were compared separately among each other by discussing their advantages and disadvantages in terms of wellbore and fluid stability, formation damage, pressure and temperature compatibility, mud rheology etc. As a result of the theoretical investigation, three different types of drilling fluids were discussed for oil and gas HPHT wells. They were water-based mud, oil-based mud and synthetic based mud. At the same time, for geothermal wells, four different types of drilling fluids were analyzed. They were water-based mud, water, aerated mud or water and air and foam. In order to understand the performance of drilling fluids used in drilling a geothermal well, three different case studies were given in terms of hole cleaning, fluid stability and wellbore hydraulics. Additionally, to observe the thermal stability of hydroxyl ethyl cellulose, xanthan gum and sodium bentonite viscosifiers at high temperature, laboratory experiment was conducted in the SINTEF laboratory. All obtained results from conducted experiment was added to the end of thesis. At the end, further work was suggested for optimization process of fluid performance for drilling both geothermal and HPHT wells.

Comparison of drilling fluids (all types of drilling fluid like WBM, OBM and SBM) using in geothermal wells versus oil and gas HPHT wells (similarities and differences) during design, during operation and during connection. The comparison should take into consideration of the reason of using the mud in each category (wellbore stability, formation damage, pressure and temperature compatibility and tolerance, inhibitor compatibility, mud rheology, and etc.)
