The theme of the thesis is theachers’ attitudes towards diversity with the following problem:”What attitutes do social studies teachers have towards “diversity”, and how are the attitudes expressed in their teaching practice?” Diversity is gaining a bigger presence in the Norwegian society and the Norwegian school as a result of globalization and immigration. In a historical perspective, the Norwegian society has been an egalitarian society through its geographical location in the periphery of Europe. Societal traditions have led us to view “equality” as more important than “difference”, an approach that limits the growing diversity and our opportunity to view it as a resourceful phenomenon in our society. In school, diversity can be linked to “everything”, and the topic has a big presence in social studies subjects, which has made it a very popular field of research in an international context. The field of research in Norway is limited and therefore this study aims to contribute to the field of research in a school context with a focus on social studies teachers’ attitudes toward diversity. The study can be useful for both social studies teachers, teachers in other subjects and teacher education because the thesis will discuss and shed light on diversity didactics in a social studies context. The study is a qualitative interview study with a hermeneutic approach to the data material. The empirical data is collected through semi-structured interviews with four social studies teachers at the upper secondary school, connected to either an urban or rural school. The analysis will be divided according to research questions that are explained in the thesis and function as subcategories for the problem. The empirical material is discussed and connected to the theoretical framework, existing of an intercultural pedagogy as well as the importance of the concept of diversity in school and diversity as a skill among social studies teachers. Findings testify that social studies teachers have a special interest in the social sciences through being socially engaged in the society, both local end international, usually up to date on what is happening in the world. The teachers all have knowledge of the concept of diversity, but its universal meaning makes it difficult to use it in a resourceful way in teaching situations because the concept demands a high level of diversity competence by the teacher. A varying competence is seen through the teachers’ attitudes to diversity and how they choose to take a position on how to enrich diversity in the classroom. The diversity competence is discussed according to a modern approach and a traditional approach without any of the informants having a permanent connection to one of the approaches. The approaches are used to reveal whether teachers’ theoretical understanding of diversity is consistent with their practical work to promote diversity through teaching. The study takes a closer look at how it plays out in classroom teaching, but also their ability to use the diversity that the local community can offer, an interesting approach that shows clear differences in the diversity found in big cities compared to peripheral areas.
