The theme of this thesis is bullying investigated as a social phenomenon. The purpose is to explore alternative ways to approach and understand what bullying is. This is a theoretical assignment where the main product is a theoretically grounded discussion of bullying. The theoretical basis for the thesis is based on several of Foucault's works, with the main emphasis on governmentality and the art of government, and surveillance and punishment. The introductory part of the thesis consists of an introduction to bullying as a topic where different key perspectives are explained. Methodological inspiration, choices and considerations are presented in the introduction to the thesis together with the thesis' structure and problem. The discussion consists of, among other things, possible issues related to both past and present conceptualisations of bullying. Bullying is also discussed in the context of modern management art, discipline, normality, deviations, cross-discrimination, social order and social institutions. The hope is that a theoretical discussion will be able to contribute to creating new tools for insight and understanding, and help us in the work of asking new and better questions in the debate on how we should understand and deal with bullying as a current societal problem.
