Background: Postoperative pain relief is a lasting challenge for patients and healthcare professionals. Epidural analgesia has been perceived as the standard, as results have shown epidural analgesia creating a more efficient surgical course. However, knowledge about how this focus on efficiency affects the reduction of epidural analgesia, is limited. In postoperative pain treatment, the nurse could meet obstacles that challenge the nurse's knowledge, attitudes, and awareness of the importance of her own role. This thesis aims to answer the question: What importance does the nurses role have in the reduction of epidural analgesia?
Method: This literature study is based on a collection of eight research articles, supplementary syllabus literature and two review articles.
Result: The results indicated that the use of epidural analgesia was successful in postoperative pain relief. However, the research showed that there is potential for improvement related to patient-participation, information dissemination, and nurses’ knowledge and attitudes.
Conclusion: Nurses have a central role in the reduction of epidural analgesia and their understanding of their own role could affect their nursing. Postoperative pain relief is about achieving interpersonal contact, trust, and safety. Nursing here is a continuous cooperation with patients, where patient-participation should be in focus. Through development towards an increasingly streamlined surgical program, nurses have a responsibility to ensure it does not come at the expense of the patient-participation. The nurse's role is thus of great importance for how the patient experiences the reduction of epidural analgesia.
