Community building in Octavia Butler’s Mind of My Mind and Parable of the Sower: Breaking free from the past and building a better world

Octavia Butlers to bøker Mind of My Mind og Parable of the Sower omhandler begge å bygge nye samfunn - og særlig samfunn som er bedre enn de som var før. Samfunnene som nevnes i bøkene er imidlertid slett ikke like. Av disse forskjellene er det kontekst, strukture og lederne som er de viktigste, og som endrer i hvilken grad samfunnene kan ses på som utopiske, samt for hvem og på hvilke måter - noe denne teksten ser nærmere på.

Octavia Butler’s two books Mind of My Mind and Parable of the Sower both heavily feature the theme of building new communities – and specifically communities which are better than the previous ones. The communities mentioned in the books are, however, far from similar. The communities still have several large differences which set them apart, of which context, structure and leadership are the most important ones. These differences also change for whom the communities might appear utopian, and in what ways and degrees - which is what this text seeks to answer.
