For å få utfyllande beskrivingar intervjua eg seks elevar om dei same oppgåvene.
The thesis focuses on pupil’s statistical understanding of the centre, where the aim is to analyse their statistical competence. In order to do so, the thesis asks: “What type of statistical understanding, and reasoning is apparent in the pupil’s description of the centre, and in where do their descriptions belong in the “Statistical literacy hierarchy” chart. Because of the large scope of the study, the thesis focuses on the sub-question “To what extent do students refer to relational understanding of the centre?”. The sub-question seeks to focus on the pupils’ ability to develop relational understanding rather than a procedural understanding. The method used is a triangulation with a focus on qualitative research method. The pupils, who were in the 9th grade, were given a set of assignments with various task about centre. The assignments asked them to find instances of centre, explain the choice, apply and interpret, and be critical of the use of centre. In addition to the assignment, I interviewed six pupils about the tasks. The results were analysed by a theoretical thematic analysis based on standings and the characteristics in the chart by Watson and Callingham (2003) “Statistical literacy hierarchy”, where higher levels in the table show a greater degree of statistical understanding. The analysis shows that pupils are not consistently in one position in the “Statistical literacy hierarchy” chart. All the pupils gave descriptions that illustrate that they have a statistical understanding that extends at least at two levels in the table. The pupils’ enthusiasm reflected their position on the chart of their thought process. Furthermore, the analysis shows that pupils’ description of the centre tends to be connected to relational understanding, with some evidence of instrumental understanding of the centre.
