SEX, SIN, AND LUXURY- THE EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY PROSTITUTE IN LITERATURE

Abstract

Denne oppgaven tar for seg prostitusjonsnarrativ publisert i Storbritannia på 1700-tallet som litterære bidrag til samtidsdebatter rundt tema som luksus, moral, klasserelasjoner og sosial mobilitet. Disse publikasjonene kan sees som bidrag til en mer omfattende litterær historie som tar for seg potensielle farer ved en utstrakt feminin påvirkning i samfunnet. Videre viser oppgaven til grunnleggende forskjeller i beskrivelsene av prostituerte mellom prostitusjonsnarrativet The Authentick Memoirs Of The Celebrated Sally Salisbury (1723), publisert tidlig på 1700-tallet, og The Uncommon Adventures of Miss Kitty F****r (1759) som ble publisert senere i samme århundret.

This thesis considers eighteenth-century prostitute narratives as literary expressions of contemporary concerns and debates relating to issues of luxury, morality, social class, and social mobility. Furthermore, the thesis attempts to position eighteenth-century prostitute narratives within a wider literary tradition largely concerned with the potentially corruptive and destructive impact of feminine influence on society. Through the use of a comparative analysis of The Authentick Memoirs Of The Celebrated Sally Salisbury (1723) and The Uncommon Adventures of Miss Kitty F****r (1759), the thesis points to a distinct shift in portrayals of prostitutes in publications from the latter part of the century compared to the earlier parts.
