En kommentar til Lucans Pharsalia VI.1-332

Abstract

I min oppgave tar jeg for meg Lucans epos Pharsalia med et snevert fokus på Dyrrachium-episoden VI.1-332 i form av et innledende essay, en gjendiktning, og en kommentar. Essayet behandler Lucans forhold til historie ved å først se på hva hans historiske kilder kanskje kan ha vært, fulgt av en nærmere analyse av forholdet mellom Caesars DBC og Lucans Pharsalia, med utgangspunkt i Dyrrachium-episoden. Kort sagt ble det funnet flere paralleller mellom tekstene enn først forventet. Gjendiktningen bringer for første gang Lucans dikt inn i norske heksametre. Kommentaren tar for seg en god del grammatikk, forklaring av persons- og stedsnavn, og knytter i hovedsak en rød tråd gjennom det hele ved å studere nærmere relasjonen mellom Lucan og Caesar, to forfattere med to veldig forskjellige fortellinger om hva som skjedde under borgerkrigen.

In my thesis I take a closer look at Lucans epic Pharsalia with a keen focus on the Dyrrachium-scene VI.1-332 in the form of an introductory essay, a poetic translation, and a commentary. The essay treats Lucans relationship with history by first looking at what his historical sources might have been, followed by an analysis of the relationship between Caesars DBC and Lucans Pharsalia, based almost solely on the Dyrrachium-scene. To put it shortly, more parallels were found between the texts than first anticipated. The poetic translation brings Lucans poem for the first time into Norwegian hexameters. The commentary contains a good amount of grammar, explanations of people and place names, and it connects the whole together by studying more closely the connection between Lucan and Caesar, two authors with very different stories about how the civil war went down.
