Us and Them ... Me and You

Abstract

Denne teksten tar for seg de filosofiske aspektene ved tekstene til Roger Waters på Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon. Teksten er i all grad basert på filosofen Martin Buber sine tanker som han fremmer i boken Ich und Du. Dette knyttes opp til tankene som Roger Waters prøver å fremme i fire låter på dette albumet: «Money», «Us and Them», «Breathe (In the Air)», og «Time». «Money» takler hvordan det kapitalistiske/materialistiske samfunnet har ført til at mennesker bare ser på hverandre som objekter for egen vinning, som samsvarer med Buber sine tanker om en Jeg-Det verden. «Us and Them» fokuserer mer på fremmedgjøringen som oppstår i det moderne samfunnet, et ønske om å finne tilbake til en Jeg-Du verden. «Breathe (In the Air)» og «Time» fokuserer på menneskets uvillighet til å innse sin egen dødelighet og menneskets inhabilitet til å leve sine egne liv, samt hvordan dette fører til en fremmedgjøring fra samfunnet. Alle låtene prater om en Jeg-Det verden og et samfunn som er modus av erfaring. Allikevel fremmer det et håp og et ønske om at mennesket igjen vil finne tilbake til modus av engasjering: en Jeg-Du verden.

This text deals with the philosophical aspects of the lyrics of Roger Waters on Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon. This text is very much based on the philosopher Martin Bubers´ thoughts in his book Ich und Du. This is then tied up to the thoughts that Roger Waters presents in four of the songs on the album. “Money”, “Us and Them”, “Breathe (In the Air), and “Time”. “Money” deals with how the capitalist/materialist society has led humans to only see each other as objects that solely are there for own personal gain, and how this matches with Bubers´ thoughts on the I-It world. “Us and Them” focuses more on the alienation that occurs in the modern society, and a wish to find back to a I-Thou world. “Breathe (In the Air)” and “Time” focuses on man’s reluctance to comprehend their own mortality, and man’s incapacity to live their own lives, and furthermore how this leads to an alienation from society. All songs encompass thoughts on an I-It world and a society that is mode of experience. Although the album promotes a hope and a wish that humanity once again will find back to mode of engagement: a I-Thou world.
