The purpose of this master's thesis is to contribute to more insight into the teachers' motivation for professional development, and thus contribute to knowledge about how to strengthen this motivation. The focus is specifically on social studies teachers. The overall problem of the thesis is: How is the social studies teachers' motivation for professional development? To answer the problem, three research questions were developed, which 1) ask whether the social studies teacher is interested in reading research to stay professionally up to date, and if so on what premises, 2) what knowledge or characteristics social studies teachers think are important for their professional practice, and finally 3) what is the social studies teachers' motivation to work as teachers, is it the dissemination of subjects or working with people that is in focus? These questions were developed through governance documents and subject literature. The thesis' problem and research questions are answered through analysis and discussion of empirical data obtained through qualitative interviews. Regarding the social studies teachers' motivation to work as teachers, it can be said that they are motivated by both people and subjects. Both the dissemination of subjects and working with people are central to their motivation in the profession. Many of the same qualities and knowledge that are highlighted in the theory chapter of the thesis are emphasized as to which knowledge or qualities the social studies teachers believe are important for their professional practice. But the awareness of subject-specific and scientific knowledge is not clearly conveyed in the answers and is interpreted as meaning that knowledge related to the curriculum and the general mandate is more important for social studies teachers than the subject-specific skills and knowledge belonging to the social sciences. The informants are clearly positive about knowledge development, but this is not necessarily related to reading research. Overall, it is concluded that the social studies teachers' motivation for professional development is good, and that this is linked to commitment and interest in both people and subjects. To strengthen this motivation and for it to involve reading research to a greater extent, it is suggested that that the school management take a more active role in making relevant research available, actualizing it and organize and initiate discussions and reflections of the research. The findings in this thesis largely correspond to existing research and literature, but also suggest a connection between subject-specific education and the teachers' professional oriented motivation for knowledge and competence development.
