Pokémon has been a popular media franchise in many years. The franchise has received critiques on how the treatment of Pokémon in Pokémon games resembles animal abuse. How Pokémon relates to this critique today regarding the newest Pokémon game Pokémon Legends Arceus, is yet to be studied. Because of this, I want to explore how the new Pokémon game communicates its relationship between humans and animals, by looking at the relationship between humans and Pokémon. My research method will be a qualitative textual analysis which will focus on the narrative of the game, as well as the formal elements. I have compared my findings in this analysis with the findings of earlier research on older Pokémon games. From the earlier research and theories on the subject, together with my analysis, I show how Pokémon in the new game, can be perceived as a representation of animals. My analysis shows that the relationship between humans and Pokémon are hardly changed from the findings in the earlier research. For example, the relationship still seems to be affected by biopower and biocapital means. The bond which is communicated between the player and Pokémon can be perceived as a form of ludonarrative dissonance called "logical inconsistencies", where the narrative communicates a strong bond between player and Pokémon, but the gameplay can be precieved to be communicating the opposite at times. I have found two different ideologies represented in relevance to the relationship between humans and animals in Pokémon Legends Arceus. The ideology that shows how humans can use animals for their own purposes, without consideration of the animal's own desires, seem to be the ideology that is communicated as the "correct" way of thinking. This implicit message, seem to be disguised as a "heroic" mission to unite Pokémon and humans, so that they can live together peacefully, according to the narrative.
