Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven tar for seg “Etiopia” av Hannah Ryggen sin resepsjonshistorie. Ved å se på hvordan billedveven har blitt utstilt ved tre forskjellige omstendigheter, får man et bilde av utviklingen i verkets mottakelse. Forskjellene i hvordan “Etiopia” ble stilt ut på 30-tallet, 60-tallet og i 2022 viser endringer i samfunnet, samt hvordan de forskjellige samfunnene bringer frem ulike reaksjoner. Oppgaven utforsker hvordan man gikk fra å sensurere deler av veven, til å kritisere dets figurer. Fra å hedre Hannah Ryggens aktivisme, til å sammenligne motivet med pågående konflikter.

This bachelor thesis is about the reception history of "Ethiopia" by Hannah Ryggen. By looking at how the tapestry has been exhibited in three different circumstances, one gets a picture of the development in the work's reception. The differences in how "Ethiopia" was exhibited in the 30s, 60s and in 2022 show changes in society, as well as how the different societies bring about different reactions. The thesis explores how one went from censoring parts of the tapestry, to criticizing its characters. From honoring Hannah Ryggen's activism, to comparing it to ongoing conflicts.
