Relationship between Inflation and Economic Growth

Abstract

Land ønsker å opprettholde og oppnå høy økonomisk vekst. Inflasjon antas å ha en viktig rolle når det kommer til økonomisk vekst. Per dags dato er inflasjonen på verdensbasis økende, og sentralbanker verden over setter fart på den kontraktive pengepolitikken. Denne oppgaven undersøker sammenhengen mellom inflasjon og økonomisk vekst. Studiet benytter tidsseriedata fra 1960-2020 for både Norge og Tyrkia. To modeller er analysert, en for Norge og en for Tyrkia. Modellene legger til kontrollvariabler steg for steg for å undersøke effekten av inflasjon på økonomisk vekst.

Resultatet av analysen er tvetydig. For Norge er funnene statistisk signifikante, og konklusjonen er at inflasjon har en negativ påvirkning på økonomisk vekst. For Tyrkia var inflasjon og økonomisk vekst også negativt korrelert, men funnene var ikke statistisk signifikante.

Countries wish to sustain high economic growth. Inflation is thought to have a major role in determining growth. Worldwide inflation rates are increasing, and central banks are speeding up their contractionary monetary policy. This paper examines the relationship between inflation and economic growth. The study uses time-series data from 1960-2020 for both Norway and Turkey. Two multiple linear regression models are created, one for Norway and one for Turkey. The models add control variables step-by-step to investigate the effect of inflation on economic growth.

The result of the analysis is ambiguous. For Norway the findings were statistically significant, and the conclusion is that inflation affects economic growth negatively. For Turkey inflation and economic growth were also negatively correlated, however the findings were not statistically significant.
