This study shows how participation in the society and integration can occur in Norway. On the basis of this, it is therefore relevant to know something about which factors play a role in the integration work. The government wish to facilitate for voluntary organizations and emphasizes the importance of these organizations. This study is based on a newly established organization called ALFIN, active life for immigrants in Norway. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine which factors and measures that can contribute to increasing community participation among people with an immigration background in Norway. This is investigated by a sample of volunteers from ALFIN. The issue in this study is “What experiences do volunteers in ALFIN have with contributing to increased community participation among people with an immigrant background?” Methods: The study is of qualitative design, and is structured to the IMRaD model. Four individual semi-structured interviews were conducted. Results: The results show that there is a lack of resources such as voluntary commitment, time and financials. ALFIN helps immigrants acquire valuable skills. It turns out that volunteer work is rewarding, but time consuming. The results show how these skills affect other important factors that contribute to integration and community participation. It also emerges that the interplay between these factors can both contribute to, and prevent participation. Conclusion: The study concludes that language and driving skills are factors that influence civic participation and integration. The lack of volunteers sets limits, not only that the organization can develop, but also that the people that need assistance receive the help they seek. How cooperation works between such organizations and municipalities can be an interesting topic that should be further researched.
