The concepts of organizational identity and organizational identification have seen growing popularity in recent years throughout research concerning organizational change and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). This may be because some research from the past decades have suggested that these concepts can be particularily well suited to predicting and understanding the results of M&A-activities. This may be because together these concepts represent a unique link between individual and organizational identity which has been increasingly used in studies attempting to understand why so many M&A fail to reach their financial or strategic goals and end in divestiture. Despite this recent popularity and clear potential the concepts are plagued by their youth, uncertain definitional grounds, and broad applications to different contexts which in turn have led to contradicting results in several studies. This suggests there is still work to be done in exploring the concept of identity in organizations. To aid in this exploration this study looks at the possibilty of applying activity theory as a framework to better understand identity in organizations in new ways. There is a focus on understanding how the extreme context of a merger affects organizational identity of the merging organizations and their members. The topic of this study is therefore; «What opportunities does the application of activity theory bring to the analysis of organizational identity?» To be able to apply activity theory in the analysis of organizational identity the analysis begins with the discussion of how the concept of identity can be understood as an activity. The finding of this study are then presented through an analysis of a merger between a small company and a large hospital based on activity theory and the concept of organizational identity as an activity.
