K: Introduksjon: Multippel sklerose rammer årlig 300-400 nordmenn.
H: Introduction: Multiple sclerosis affects annually 300-400 Norwegians. It is a chronic, irreversible disease that affects the patients psychological and physical functioning. The disease affects each patient different and the course of the disease is often uncertain. Aim: To determine whether nurses and other health care professionals can help the newly diagnosed patient with MS to cope with the disease’s influence on activities of daily living by patient education and guidance, in the form of information. Method: The thesis is a literature review. Systematic and unsystematic searches have been conducted in order to acquire research related to the thesis’ topic. Most common search words are ”multiple sclerosis”, ”activities of daily living”, ”coping”, ”self-efficacy” og ”patient education”. Results: The information has to be relevant and directed to each individual. Enough time and a setting without interruptions are needed. The conversation should be based on honesty and give the patient safety in a vulnerable situation. Health care professionals should treat patients with respect, courtesy and engagement. The functioning of ADL does not seem to be affected in a great way the first 10 years of the disease, but will gradually decrease after a period of 10 years. Conclusion: Relevant and high quality information tailored towards each patient seems to be of great importance to cope with the disease effect on ADL-functioning. It turns out that a number of methods and factors in order to be able to receive information is important for patients.nb_NO
