dc.description.abstract | To date, more and more traditional water treatment methods are replaced with
membrane filtration owing to stringent quality requirements and limitations of such methods
in coping with the future water quality requirements. Low pressure membrane (LPM) systems
are considered a good alternative to meet the future drinking water quality requirements. The
last decade has seen the increase of LPM applications in drinking water production.
Membrane fouling, however, is still considered one of the biggest challenges in membrane
technology, not only for LPM but also for membrane applications in general. This
phenomenon impacts the sustainability of the membrane systems as a whole if not
precociously tackled. Particulate or colloidal matter is considered one of the major foulants in
LPM owing to their sizes. Coagulation pretreatment is proven advantageous for improving the
filtration performance. Specifically, inline coagulation (IC) has been demonstrated as an
alternative to the classical tank coagulation (TC) in dead-end ceramic microfiltration (MF) of
natural organic matter (NOM). IC-MF offers a simpler process configuration and lower
investment costs without compromising the filtrate quality.
Blocking laws have been commonly applied in elucidating fouling phenomena in LPM
dealing with Newtonian or non-Newtonian fluids. This study showed that the extended
blocking laws for non-Newtonian fluid are theoretically sound i.e. direct relation with the
classical blocking laws for Newtonian fluid exists. However, applying the modified equations
in filtration experiments was proven problematic, mainly owing to the fact that the fluid
continuity principle was not fulfilled. Moreover, results showed that TMP profiles during
filtration experiments of non-Newtonian fluids resemble the characteristic of cake filtration,
suggesting that evaluation of resistance components is sufficient in addressing the challenge
to elucidate the fouling propensity as opposed to a mechanistic approach.
This study attempted to overcome blocking laws’ weaknesses i.e. the facts that
blocking laws neglect transition of the dominant fouling mechanisms and simultaneous
fouling mechanisms may operate at the same instance, by combining blocking laws with the
resistance-in-series model. The approach was applied in explaining fouling phenomenon in
dead-end, constant flux MF of coagulated NOM water. Filtration experiments showed that
NOM separation performance was solely dependent on the applied dose of coagulant
irrespective to the applied process conditions (i.e. degree of mixing and the flocculation time)
and configurations (i.e. inline vs. tank coagulation). Process conditions and configuration,
however, were found to be the determining factors of the degree of membrane fouling and the
observed operational performance (e.g. reversibility of membrane fouling and characteristic
increase of TMP due to fouling). Combing the blocking laws and resistance-in-series model
was able to distinguish the characteristics of filtration of membranes fed by TC and IC. Cake
compressibility was found to be different in each condition tested, with clear interplays
between the process conditions applied and the resulting compressibility. Assessment of the cake compressibility parameters is a good consideration for choosing the optimal process
condition to be applied.
Furthermore, this study addressed the extent of membrane fouling by looking closely
at the properties of aggregates produced from the different process conditions and
configurations. Fractal dimensions (1D-3D) were employed to characterize aggregate
morphology. It was found that the aggregate properties determine the nature of membrane
fouling and investigating the properties of the aggregate can therefore assess the extent of
membrane fouling. 1D and 2D fractal dimensions from power-law and box-counting methods
were proven complementary in describing the membrane fouling phenomenon i.e. in
explaining the resistance components and cake compressibility parameters. Particle/aggregate
morphology is of great importance in membrane filtration and can be used to evaluate its
relation to fouling phenomenon observed. In addition, fractal dimensions can be exploited to
elucidate the membrane fouling by providing insights to the cake structural properties. This
study explored the application of 3D fractal dimension for the analysis of cake porosity and
permeability, which further complement the cake compressibility analysis from combing the
blocking laws and resistance-in-series model. This study utilized the cake parameters from the
combined model in analysis of cake layer fractal dimension. Such an approach was found
complementary to the types of analysis characterizing the aggregates.
This study also suggests that characterization of NOM fractions in relation to the
membrane properties may help understand NOM fouling. Understanding the interaction
between NOM fractions and membrane properties may help minimize the fouling propensity
during NOM separation. The hydrophobic-hydrophilic interactions appear to be the dominant
mechanism in NOM-membrane interactions and fouling during filtration experiments of raw
and flotated waters. | nb_NO |
I tillegg, resultatene at TMP profiler under
filtrering eksperimentene viste at non-Newtonian væsker likner karakteristisk for kake
modellen.
brukt.
begroing tilbøyelighet under NOM separasjon.
