The goal of this study is to investigate how documentary film can contribute to creating a dialogue. I have carried out a qualitative investigation using two approaches: first I have analyzed the Norwegian documentary Gaza’s Tears, which presents a conflict; and second I have conducted in-depth interviews with the film directors and other documentarists in Norway. In the thesis´ film analysis, the focus is on motives. The director’s goals and motives are decisive in determining the film’s impact and how the audience responds. In addition the director must have a strategy to finance the film and therefore the motives are influenced by the nature of the film market in Norway – which in turn is largely dependent upon state support. In the interviews the investigation has focused on the directors’ interest in producing documentary films – how they evaluate Gaza’s Tearsand how they themselves can start a dialogue by means of film. Further, the thesis investigate the concept “reality” in documentary film, something which often starts discussions on what is true or untrue, on what is real or not real, that is, the film’s credibility. Related questions are whether the film creator should be “objective” or can be subjective, and if so, how and why? The investigation has also looked at observational, interactive, reflective and other methods and modes for creating a documentary film, and how differences in approach means that films cannot always be easily classified. The focus is on various elements which influence film production, some of which are related to the film’s genre, others to the goals of the filmmaker, while others again are related to the social values of the viewers in particular societies. The thesis investigates how the influence of films on public opinion occurs in three contexts: the strengthening of existing public opinion, modifying an aspect of public opinion, or initiating a new public opinion. In addition there is a focus on the confidence of the sender of a message and how this plays a role in strengthening or changing beliefs. Thus the thesis focuses on the premises for persuasion, as illustrated by a consideration of VibekeLøkkeberg, the director of Gaza’s Tears, and her role and influence in Norway, as well as the influence of the purchase of the film by NRK (the national broadcaster). This led to a consideration of film politics in the documentary film market in Norway. The thesis thereby discuss decisive factors that will influence the whole process of film creation that filmmakers must take into account before, during and after filming, presenting challenges to be overcome each time they must choose between multiple alternatives in the process of filmmaking.
