Abstract in English (optional) The research question of the thesis reads as follows: What are the main threats and opportunities facing service innovation in the national innovation system of Norway and in the EU? In the introduction it is advocated that Norway is suffering from an “Ashlad syndrome” in relation to service innovation (the Ashlad is the Norwegian folklore equivalent to Cinderella). The nature of the so-called Ashlad condition is threefold – involving both the geographical location of Norway in the northern periphery, the traditional business and industry priorities in terms of public policy means, and the Norwegian connection to the EU as an outsider country. While Norway is not an EU member state, the current Norwegian affiliations with the union may involve opportunities for service innovation in the future. In a SWOT based analysis the thesis concludes that Norway must increasingly make use of the formal and informal affiliations with the EU, if the goal of the fairytale of service innovation is to live happily ever after.nb_NO
