This master’s thesis is about how the interaction between modalities unfolds in multimodal texts produced by 3rd (K2) and 7th (K6) graders. I examine how cohesion mechanisms, defined and developed by Theo van Leeuwen (2004), might have different functions. Both in relation to each other and as expressions in the student texts. The data materials are collected from the Norm Project’s (2012-2016) text corpus. The problem to be addressed is: What characterizes the multimodal interaction in six student texts from the Norm Project Corpus? The six student texts have been selected on the basis that the interactions in the texts are typical for a larger part of the Norm Corpus, and are thus representing different parts of the Corpus. The purpose of this study is to understand what multimodal interaction can be in the selected student texts, and to compare my findings with previous research on the field. In the study, I have taken an abductive approach by using both theoretical and empirical methods. Categorization of the data and the analysis tool have both been adapted to the material and are therefore able to tell something about the characterizations of the multimodal interaction. The thesis is based on a social semiotic approach to multimodality. The approach emphasizes the fact that writing is a meaning-making activity, where we use resources that create meaning to communicate and represent meaning. Based on this, I use key semioticians such as Theo van Leeuwen and Gunther Kress as base. The analysis tool is built on van Leeuwen’s (2005) theory of multimodal cohesion, which includes the cohesion mechanisms rhythm, composition, information linking and dialogue. The analysis is also based on Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar (2006). The study shows that the most commonly used cohesion mechanism in the student texts is information linking. The texts should be contemplated as dynamic expressions, in the sense that information links may have several functions in the same text. The students show that they have multimodal text skills, by showing knowledge of the affordance of modality through their chosen modalities. The students also show that they might have an imaginary receiver through the cohesion mechanism composition.
