Kjønnsfremføring og forvandling: En litterær analyse av kjønnskonstruksjoner i ungdomsromanen Pojkarna

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven undersøker hvordan vi kan forstå og arbeide med temaet kjønn i litteraturundervisningen. Blikket rettes mot ungdomslitteratur som tematiserer kjønn, og det gjøres en nærlesning av ungdomsromanen Pojkarna (2011) av den svenske forfatteren Jessica Schiefauer. Problemstillingen for denne oppgaven er: Hvordan konstrueres kjønn i ungdomsromanen Pojkarna?

Oppgaven plasserer seg i en kombinasjon av felt. I det overordnede målet for oppgaven ligger det en litteraturdidaktisk tilknytning. Videre gir studieobjektet for denne oppgaven en tilknytning til barne- og ungdomslitteraturen, samt litteraturteorien. Til slutt plasserer denne oppgaven seg innenfor queer-teorien og poststrukturalismen. Leserposisjonen i oppgaven baserer seg på Judith Butlers tanker om kjønn som performativt, samt Jacques Derridas tanker om teksten og tegnets iterabilitet. Gjennom å se disse i sammenheng skrives det frem en leserposisjon som åpner for å undersøke hvordan kjønn performeres og konstrueres i litteraturen gjennom repetisjon og sitering.

Lesningen av Pojkarna viser at romanen åpner for refleksjon og undring rundt kjønnsidentitet, og stiller viktige spørsmål om hva kjønn egentlig er. Den lesningen som gjøres forsøker å bidra med en teoretisk forståelse av kjønn, og en måte å forstå kjønn i ungdomslitteraturen på. Slik kan også lesningen fungere som en inngang til å arbeide med kjønnstematikk i litteraturundervisningen.

This master's thesis examines how we can understand and work with the topic of gender in literature teaching. The focus is places on the thematization of gender in young adult literature, and a close reading of the novel Pojkarna (2011) by the Swedish author Jessica Schiefauer, is done. The thesis statement is: How is gender constructed in the YA novel Pojkarna?

The study is placed in a combination of theoretical fields. In the overall goal of the thesis, we find a connection to literature didactics. Furthermore, the study object for this thesis serves a connection to children's and YA literature, as well as literary theory in general. Finally, this thesis is anchored within queer theory and poststructuralism. The reading of Pojkarna is based on Judith Butler's thoughts on gender performativity, as well as Jacques Derrida's thoughts on the text and the sign’s iterability. By combining these two theories, we can examine how gender is performed and constructed in literature through repetition and citation.

The reading of Pojkarna shows that the novel invites to reflect on gender and asks important questions about what gender identity really is. The reading that is done wishes to contribute with a theoretical understanding of gender, and a way of understanding gender in YA literature. Thus, the reading also functions as an entrance to work with gender issues in the literature classroom.
