«Kanskje ikke han villa at faren ska bli forelska i en mann»: En studie av hvordan en gruppe elever på 6. trinn samtaler om tematikken i romanen Den sommeren pappa ble homo

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven undersøker hvordan fire elever på 6. trinn samtaler om romanen Den sommeren pappa ble homo, med vekt på deres forståelse av og tanker rundt bokas tematikk om homofili. Dette romanprosjektet har flere komponenter, men det er de litterære samtalene som er utgangspunkt for analysen i denne studien. Metoder for datainnsamlingen er deltakende observasjon og fortolkning. Resepsjonsteori gjør seg gjeldende i denne oppgaven, og med utgangspunkt i Iser ser jeg på forholdet mellom tekst og leser, da det er av stor betydning for analysen av elevenes tolkninger av romanen.

Et av hovedtemaene i boka er homofili, og denne tematikken blir belyst i de litterære samtalene gjennom tre ulike samtaletemaer; elevenes tolkninger av karakterenes holdninger til homofili, hvordan elevene knytter romanen til samfunnsrelevante diskusjoner om homofili samt elevenes engasjement for relasjonen mellom de to hovedkarakterene Arvidsjaur og Indiane. På bakgrunn av tematikkfokuset i samtalene vil kjønnsteori ha en sentral rolle i denne oppgaven. Studien viser at skjønnlitteratur kan være en fruktbar inngang til å arbeide med en tematikk, som i den nye læreplanen viser sin relevans, blant annet i de tverrfaglige temaene folkehelse og livsmestring og demokrati og medborgerskap. Skjønnlitteratur kan få elevene til å reflektere over egne liv og mennesker de kan møte, og derfor vil teorier om narrativ empati være relevant.

I denne studien vil jeg argumentere for at det bør arbeides mer med lengre tekster, især romanen, i skolen. Lesningen av og samtalene om Den sommeren pappa ble homo viser at en slik roman kan gi elever en dypere innsikt i en viktig tematikk, øve dem i kritisk tenkning i møte med litteratur samt gjøre elevene til mer reflekterte medborgere.

This master thesis is a study of how four 6th graders talk about and understand the novel Den sommeren pappa ble homo, with focus on the novels theme about homosexuality. Literary conversations is the primary activity and the object to be studied in this thesis, though the novel project consists of several components. Participatory observation and interpretation are the main research methods. Reception theory is relevant in this study, and Iser is used as the main theoretician when analyzing the interaction between the text and the reader. This is of great importance when studying the students interpretations of the novel.

One of the main themes of the book is homosexuality, which is also the theme discussed in the literary conversations. The conversations are sorted in three different focus areas; the students interpretations of the characters’ attitudes to homosexuality, how the students link the novel to how homosexuality is defined in the society, and the students engagement for the relationship between the main characters Arvidsjaur and Indiane. Due to homosexuality being the theme of discussion in the literary conversations, I find it necessary to present gender theory. The study shows that fiction can be a great way to work with a theme that is relevant in the new curriculum, for example in the interdisciplinary topics health and life skills and democracy and citizenship. Fiction can get the students to reflect on their own lives in addition to better understand people, and theories of narrative empathy will therefore be relevant.

In this study I will argue that we should work with longer texts, especially novels, in school. The reading of and the conversations about Den sommeren pappa ble homo shows that such a novel can give students a deeper insight in important topics, make them practice their critical thinking in interaction with fiction, and make the students more reflected citizens.
