With the pending «eldrebølge», it has been debated how we will cover the future needs of the elderly citizens. Nursing homes will be necessary to help cover these needs. Therefore, it is relevant to study how nursing homes function as homes for residents, and how these homes are created in their institutional framework. To study this, I seek to answer the research question: How are nursing home residents’ homes created in interaction with the nursing home architecture and the work of the health professionals? The study addresses the framework, in which the home is created, and how health professionals work to make the nursing home become a home for the residents. In light of interactionist theory, I investigate how health professionals create a home and how the nursing home architecture affect the interaction between health professionals and residents, as well as the residents’ room for agency. By the use of a qualitative method, I have interviewed four nursing home health professionals, one nursing home ward leader and one architect that is engaged in building nursing homes. In addition, I have done an observational visit at a nursing home ward. This is the foundation in my investigation on how nursing home residents’ homes are created.Through analysis of the data, I have found that there is a complex group of actors who contribute to create the home in the nursing home. The architecture is one of those actors, and I find that the nursing home is split between “rooms of the workplace” and “rooms of the home”. Further, I have found that health professionals work to make a home in the “rooms of the home”. They do this promoting autonomy and a sense of community for the residents, as well as decorating the common areas in a homely way. The work to make it homely is challenged by the nursing home’s institutional features and organisation. I also find that these institutional features and health professionals work affect residents’ room for agency, and in its consequences their home. This study offers a better understanding of how one creates a sense of homeliness for residents in nursing homes characterized by institutional and work-related features.
