Steve Gadd og Dave Weckl - en studie av trommegrooves i Chick Coreas musikk

Abstract

Oppgaven tar for seg trommegrooves av Steve Gadd og Dave Weckl på albumene The Leprechaun (1976) og Chick Corea Elektric Band (1986). Sentrale spørsmål er å undersøke hvilke stiler og sjangerhentydninger Gadd og Weckl er inspirert av på de respektive album, hvordan deres innfallsvinkler i groove og samspill i relasjon til resten bandet utarter seg, og hvorvidt disse kan statueres som kreative. I tillegg gjøres det rede for utviklingen av jazz-rock og fusion i et historisk perspektiv, og hvordan dette har påvirket og influerert Gadd og Weckl, både i det stilmessige, men også i det klanglige, gjennom bruk av teknologi og i kontekst til jazz-idiomet som helhet. Med dette som utgangspunkt, er forskningen basert på litteratur og teori som omhandler groove, improvisasjon i jazz, kreativitet i tromming, i tillegg til generell teori og historie om jazz-rock og fusion, i tillegg til anmeldelser, intervjuer og Youtube-videoer.

The thesis deals with drum grooves by Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl on the albums The Leprechaun (1976) and Chick Corea Elektric Band (1986). Central questions are examining what styles and genre references Gadd and Weckl are inspired by on their respective albums, how their approaches to groove and interaction in relation to the rest of the band are made up, and whether these can be stated as creative. In addition, an explanation of the development of jazz rock and fusion in a historical perspective, and how this has influenced Gadd and Weckl, both in the stylistic but also in the sounds, through the use of technology and in the context of the jazz idiom as a whole, is central. With this as a starting point, the research is based on literature and theory that deals with groove, improvisation in jazz, creativity in drumming, as well as general theory and history of jazz-rock and fusion, as well as reviews, interviews and Youtube videos.
