dc.description.abstractNedgang i kognitive evner i normal aldring er relatert til nedgang i integritet i hjernens hvitstoff, som måles in vivo med bruk av diffusjonstensor avbildning (DTI). Denne studien benyttet partial least squares (PLS), en multivariat metode, for å avdekke systemer med latent kovarians i hvitstoffintegritet og kognitiv evne i en gruppe eldre deltakere (N=63). PLS produserte to viktige systemer med kovarians, en som representerte eksekutiv funksjon og en som representerte episodisk hukommelse. Der var ikke mulig å forutse global kognitiv evne basert på hvor mye enhver deltaker uttrykket de mektigste systemene med kovarians. Overraskende nok, funnene antydet at verre hvitstoffintegritet i nedre temporale og frontale deler og bedre hvitstoffintegritet i øvre parietale og oksipitale deler av hjernen indikerte bedre global kognitiv evne ved et senere tidspunkt.
dc.description.abstractDeclines in cognitive function in normal aging have been linked to decreases in white matter (WM) integrity, measured non-invasively using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The present study was an exploratory analysis using multivariate partial least squares (PLS) to uncover latent patterns of covariance between WM integrity and cognitive performance in an aging sample (N=63). PLS extracted two dominant systems of covariance, one representing executive function and another representing episodic memory. It was not possible to predict later global cognitive function based on how strongly each participant expressed the dominant patterns of WM integrity and cognitive performance. A surprising relationship was revealed in which poorer WM integrity in anterior temporal and frontal areas and better WM integrity in superior parietal and occipital areas was associated with better later global cognitive function.
