Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine how restrictions caused by the corona pandemic affected the psychosocial work environment among nurses working in the orthopaedic department. The study focused on three sub-themes of the psychosocial work environment: social relations, communication and psychological impact such as depression and anxiety. Method: The study used a quantitative survey to investigate the effect of the pandemic on the work environment. The inclusion criteria were authorized nurse working in the orthopaedic department. The survey was conducted in March 2021 and Excel was used to analyse the results. Results: Most of the nurses (88%) experienced sense of belonging at the workplace to a large extent/a very large extent. Almost a third found it difficult to get to know colleagues and maintain the relationship with employees due to the restrictions. Most of the nurses thought the communication was optimal both physically and with digital communication despite the restrictions. More than half of the respondents thought there were misunderstandings or loss of information to some extent when using digital communication tools. The prevalence of depression was 19% and anxiety 7%. Conclusion: The study shows that the restrictions affect the psychosocial work environment by making it difficult to get to know colleagues and maintain relationships at the workplace. The sense of belonging, and the physical and digital communication however seems to be affected to a small degree. The prevalence of depression shows both high and low numbers when comparing other studies, but the prevalence is about the same as the general prevalence of depression in Norway. The prevalence of anxiety on the other hand appears to be low.
