Background: Children of parents with severe mental illness are estimated by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health to be 135,000. Children of parents with severe illness have a higher risk of developing mental, behavioral and social problems than other children. The severity of the disorder has an effect on the risk of negative consequences for the children. Purpose: The purpose of this literature study is to examine children's experiences and experiences by growing up with parents with mental disorders, and shed light on how nurses can meet the children and help them to have greater mastery in their situation. Method: This is a literature study based on eight qualitative research studies. Result: The children showed concern for the parents' mental illness, and experienced a lot of insecurity in their childhood. The children used coping strategies to achieve balance and coping in their lives. They developed independence and problem-solving abilities in some cases by taking on emotional responsibility towards the family. Support and information from mental health services was one of several resources that could help children cope with the situation. The children received too little information about their parents' mental illness, which resulted in increased concern and insecurity. Lack of competence among nurses made them resist talking to the children. Conclusion: Information and support can help children gain greater mastery in their lives. In order for nurses to be able to give this to their children, they need more training and education - so that they become more secure in their role with children as next of kin. Keywords: Children of parents with mental illness, coping strategies, information, support.
