Økt fare for arbeidsrelaterte
dc.description.abstract | Background/Purpose: Research shows that sleep deprivation due to shift work and
disturbances in circadian rhythm, is considered a global problem for healthcare workers.
Sleep deprivation leads to negative effects on the attention, memory, and the mood etc.
As a working nurse you are required by law to provide safe and professional care. The
purpose of this literature study is to look at the discipline of nursing, shift work and proper
professional practice, and contemplate if there is a connection between the nurses working
shifts and their ability to provide proper care.
Method: Systematic literature study that uses eight research articles, six quantitative, one
qualitative and one review article.
Result: Analysis of the study shows that working shifts affects the nurses sleep and
circadian rhythm negatively, with reduced efficiency, memory at work, and professional
practice. A study showed that more than 17 hours awake, will make your psychomotor
correspondent to having a 0.5 per mill. By looking at the negative aspects of sleep
deprivation, we see that it has a clear impact on the nurse’s ability to care for patients and
function properly. One of the studies showed a 40% increased risk of hurting oneself, the
patient, equipment or falling into micro-sleep on evening- day shift combinations,
compared to work without or with fewer said work periods.
Conclusion: The research articles used in this literature study shows a direct correlation
between working shifts, less sleep, and work-related accidents. Increased probability of
work-related accidents will decrease the patient’s safety and the work can be assessed as
no longer within reason.
The Health Personnel Act states that working nurses and the health department both
separately and together have a responsibility to secure proper and professional practice,
and to ensure respectable patient safety.
