Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to look more closely at what factors nurses must consider when adapting information and counselling, on how to prevent complications due to type 2 diabetes, to non- western immigrants. Method: This assignment futures a limited systematic literature study as method. I have used databases such as PubMed, Swemed+ and Medline, with search words such as: Type 2 diabetes, diabetes, immigrant, nurse, culture, language, barriers, communication, interpreter and ethnic minority to find relevant scientific articles that highlights the purpose of this assignment. There in total 7 scientific articles used in this assignment. Results: The results identify that language and culture differences can create a barrier nurses and patients. These factors can be crucial to whether nurses are able to disseminate information and counselling/education in a way that ensures that patients benefit from it. In those cases where information and counselling/education are not adapted on the grounds that nurses are facing a patient with a different culture and language than the nurse itself, the risk of misunderstanding will increase, and thus the risk of developing complications also increase. The results also identify the need for increased cultural knowledge and understanding among nurses, and increased training in the use of interpreters during interaction with patients. Conclusion: Both research and theory show that the knowledge of the patient´s language and cultural background is of great importance in meeting with non- western immigrants. Nurses must have culture competence and knowledge about how the patient´s view on health, and show both a cultural sensitive and cultural- relative attitude towards the patients. In addition, nurses have to be aware of any language barrier that may occur when facing this patient group, and employ good professional and helpful communication, and use professional interpreters to ensure that the message reaches the patient in its entirety.
