Innledning: Artikkelens hensikt var å undersøke hva som gjør hospice til et spesielt palliativt tilbud og hvordan sykepleiere opplever å arbeide på et hospice. Metode: For å undersøke hva som gjør hospice til et spesielt tilbud og hvordan sykepleiere opplever det å jobbe på hospice ble det gjennomført fem skriftlige, kvalitative strukturerte intervju. De intervjuede sykepleierne arbeider ved et hospice og har erfaring med palliativ behandling. Intervjuene ble analysert ved hjelp av meningskoding. Resultat: Resultatene viser at hospice skiller seg fra andre palliative tilbud sykepleierne har erfaring fra. Det kommer frem at personalet snakker åpent med pasient og pårørende om døden og det fokuseres på hva som gir hver enkelt livskvalitet. Tilstrekkelig tid og ro, tett samarbeid med pårørende og høy faglig kompetanse er andre faktorer som gjør hospice til et spesielt palliativt tilbud. I tillegg viser funnene at hospice preges av latter og glede, og at ivaretakelse av personalet står sentralt. Funnene viser at sykepleierne er svært fornøyde med å jobbe på hospice. Sykepleierne beskrev arbeidet som meningsfullt og at det oppleves som givende. Samtidig viser resultatene at sykepleiere møter ulike utfordringer på hospice. Konklusjon: Studien har vist at åpenhet rundt døden, tid og ro, fokus på livskvalitet, personell med høy faglig kompetanse og omsorg for pårørende gjør hospice til et spesielt palliativt tilbud. Sykepleierne opplever det å jobbe på hospice som meningsfullt og givende, samtidig som det kan være utfordrende.

Abstract

Introduction: The objective of this article is to identify what makes hospice a special palliative service and how nurses experience working at a hospice. Method: To investigate what makes hospice a special palliative service and how nurses experience working at hospice, five written qualitative structured interviews were conducted. The interviewed nurses work at a hospice and have experience with palliative care. The interviews were analyzed by using coding. Results: The results have shown that hospice differs from other palliative services the nurses have experience with. It appears that staff talk openly with patient and relatives about death and focus is on what gives each individual quality of life. Sufficient time and calmness, close cooperation with relatives and high professional competence are other factors that make hospice a special palliative service. In addition, the findings show that hospice is characterized by laughter and joy, and that the care of the staff is important. The findings show that the nurses are very satisfied with working at a hospice. The nurses described the work as meaningful and that it was perceived as rewarding. At the same time, the results show that nurses face different challenges at hospice. Conclusion: This study has shown that openness around death, time and calmness, focus on quality of life, staff with high professional competence and caring for relatives make hospice a special palliative service. The nurses experience working at hospice as meaningful and rewarding, but at the same time challenging.
