Thesis question: How can nurses talk about sexual health with young people with physical disabilities? Background: Adolescents and young adults with physical abilities may experience not being taken seriously by healthcare professionals when inquiring about issues relating to sexuality and sexual health. Many young people with physical disabilities report being treated as if they have no sexuality, and therefore struggle to gather relevant information and necessary education about sexual health. Purpose: To identify various communication strategies, and methods of conducting safe and comfortable conversations about sexual health between nurses and youths with physical disabilities. Method: The thesis employs a structured literature review, drawing from both literary criticism and qualitative research conducted on the topic of sexual health among youths with physical disabilities. The paper seeks to answer the thesis question through analysis and discussion of relevant literature. Findings: The thesis uncovers a variety of myths and misconceptions that negatively affects the medical care offered to youths with disabilities. Lack of education, time and resources, and nurses’ lack of practice discussing such topics limits their ability to achieve good communication with patients. Conclusion: In order to communicate properly about sexual health, nurses may require extra training, as well as practice in communication. The PLISSIT- tool for communication can be a useful resource. It is also important to acknowledge disabled people as complex individuals and take their sexual health concerns seriously.
