This bachelor thesis has been written on behalf of Kverneland Group Norway. The target has been to propose improvements related to the current production of packer wheels being used in their product Packomat® and further to propose a new design solution as an alternative to the existing solution. The purpose has on one side been to propose actions that can reduce the cost of production and in addition to reduce the scraping and correction cost in relation to the current way of producing. On the other side the purpose has been to propose an alternative design that has at least the same properties as the current product and further have the potential to be produced in a cost-efficient way. The first part has been including interviews with chosen representatives from the company with the aim to retrieve the information needed in relation to the current production setup. Further there has been cost analysis conducted to be able to see where the potential for cost reduction is. The second part of the thesis has been to propose new alternative design solutions for the rings being used for the Packomat® product. With a list of requirements given by the company as a starting point together with the cost analysis made, four new design solutions are proposed. One alternative is chosen as the best based upon the use of the Pugh’s method. The strength of the new designs is analyzed by FEM-analyses, where stress and displacements at a given loads are inspected. In relation to the new design solution, also alternative materials and production methods has been evaluated. The first part of the thesis has resulted in several proposed actions to improve the process stability in the current production setup. This includes deep drawing as a substitute to cold forming and investing in weld robots. A root cause analysis is recommended to be done for the hardening process to locate where and why the discrepancies are occurring. In relation to the new design the focus has been to develop a packer ring that include low cost operations, have as few different parts as possible and at the same time increases the value for the customer through increased lifetime and improved user friendliness. The FEM analysis shows lower Von Mises stress compared to the existing solution at a given load, but the sideways deflection is much higher compared to the existing solution. The points regarding increased lifetime and reduced production cost can’t be verified within the project frame, but an evaluation in this respect has been made. The chosen design solution consists of a steel body, with replaceable plastic wear parts are fitted. It has 90% less welding length compared to the existing large packer ring. As a part of the project the company has made a concept prototype for the new design. It has 3D-printed plastic parts and therefore not a functional model.
