In order to assure a safe and secure water supply to the town of Espa in Stange municipality in the future, it was deemed necessary to investigate two alternative solutions. These solutions consist of 1: A subsea water pipe between Tangen and Espa, and 2: A water treatment plant at Espa. Investigating both alternative solutions ensures a suitable comparison of specific criteria, using a point system to determine the more superior solution. This method has the purpose of concluding the most superior solution for the case. In the process of reviewing both alternatives, substantial amounts of data have been obtained to draft both options in relation to the estimated water consumption in Espa. Furthermore, this case has been reviewed with the aspect of sustainability as a sub-goal. During the analysis for alternative 1, the position determination for the elevated water storage tank, pipeline route and design of the subsea water pipe was established. Additionally, an innovative design for the subsea water pipe was developed. This design will be able to contribute to saving resources as it is advantageous due to its flexibility in consonance with water consumption in about 20-80 years. This innovative design additionally satisfies the requirements of correct dimensioning in line with water consumption at any given time. For the second alternative solution which considers a water treatment plant, various types of water treatment systems were investigated factoring in the variations in treatment methods and processes. In determining the optimal type of water treatment system, the water quality in lake Mjøsa and the environmental aspect have been taken into consideration. Based on the various structures of the water treatment systems, the decision was made to go with an ozone biofilter plant. It has been found that facilities which are based on ozonation are more environmentally friendly than other options reviewed in this study, and offer a simpler operation and maintenance protocol. In order to answer which alternative solution is the best fit for the case, a selection of criteria from the methods and results chapter have been emphasized. The chosen criteria are measured by a point system, in which they can be dedicated points from 1 to 3 according to their alignment to the desired parameters. The result of the point distribution is summarized in a table with a thorough conclusion at the end of the thesis. Based on the selected criteria it is concluded with that the first alternative solution with a subsea water pipe between Tangen and Espa is the best fit for the case.
