This thesis approaches a potential problem with using CLT as the main component of tall structures with long spans between walls due to the lack of resistance to forces perpendicular to the grain in wood. This problem may arise as the traditional way of connecting floor slabs to wall elements is to simply place the floor atop the underlying wall and then the next wall directly on the floor. When loads are applied the floor slabs may experience compression if they are higher than the initial resistance in the material used. We have investigated the commonly used ways of circumventing this and come up with a suggestion of our own which could also be applicable in certain structures to avoid working around the issue by reducing spans and placing columns. CLT is being used more often in Norway as factories are being built to produce it and customers and the public seem to be positive about the appearance of structures where it is the main component. As it becomes a popular choice there is also a need of innovation to improve applicability and circumvent using steel or concrete to maintain structural properties of the building. Using primarily wood could also be beneficial due to Norway’ high supply of forests since wood is a renewable source of energy and considered CO2 neutral. Sustainability of these resources can become a concern if we are not considerate about it but at the time of writing this is not an issue in Norway. To ensure that our idea can be applied we had to study common ways of designing the connection between walls and floor, and during the writing of this we have used Eurocode 5, handbooks from the Norwegian Institute of Wood Technology, Swedish Wood and FPInnovations. Our idea consists of creating a notch-connection/finger-joint in the underlying wall and floor slabs, connecting them while allowing the walls to connect in the direction of grain which makes sure the floor slabs will not have any direct axial force applied to them. By integrating the designing methods into Excel we had an easier way to get a lot of data to compare and discuss and were able to find that shear-capacity will be lost in the floor slabs equivalent to the proportion of material removed in the width, without necessarily meaning that this would become a design issue due to a high initial capacity. Our results have found that the design capacity when comparing axial forces perpendicular to the grain as well as along the grain increases in most cases with 140mm thick walls and 160mm thick floor slabs and greater. Based on this we conclude that the notch-connection could be chosen if shear is not found to be a restricting factor in the design process.
