The Greatest Showman - an in depth study of P. T. Barnum's character in the musical.

Abstract

Phineas Taylor Barnum er et navn som har skapt kontroverser, og musikalen The Greatest Showman mottok tilbakemeldinger av kritisk natur etter filmen kom ut. Kritikere mente at filmens innhold i stor grad var formet for å passe Hollywood-modellen, og hevdet at den ekte sirkusdirektøren var mer enn kynisk forretningsmann, enn en helt. I lys av denne kritikken ønsker jeg å analysere karakteren til P. T. Barnum i musikalen The Greatest Showman, og undersøke om fremstillingen av karakteren samsvarer hvem den ekte Barnum var. For å finne ut av det, vil jeg først gi en kort oppsummering av Barnums liv, samt handlingsforløpet i musikalen. Deretter gir jeg et innblikk i den sosiale og formelle konteksten til filmen, for å danne et historisk tolkningsgrunnlag. Analysen består av en karakterstudie av Barnum's fremtoning i filmen, og ser nærmere på hans rolle som familiemann, sirkusdirektør og forretningsmann. Jeg poengterer hvilke filmteknikker som er tatt i bruk for å understreke de ulike karakterene, og legger frem eksempler og sitater fra filmen. Avslutningsvis diskuterer jeg hvordan filmkarakteren samsvarer med den ekte P. T. Barnum. Gjennom arbeidet har jeg funnet ut at flere av hendelsene i filmen er tatt fra virkeligheten, men at karakteren til sirkusdirektøren er skapt for å passe Hollywoodmodellen, og dermed viker fra virkeligheten.

Phineas Taylor Barnum bears a controversial name, and the musical The Greatest Showman received feedback of critical nature after it was published. Critics found the content of the film too Hollywood-esque and deemed that the real Showman was less of a hero, and more of a greedy businessman. In light of the critique, I want to analyze P. T. Barnum’s character in the musical The Greatest Showman and investigate whether the character aligns with the historical figure. To do so, I firstly give a brief summary of the real life of Barnum and also a summary of the film. I also lay provide the social and formal context of the movie, as it is important to view Barnum’s character through historically accurate eyes. The analysis of the essay provides the study of Barnum’s embodiment of different personas throughout the movie, namely as a family man, a showman and a businessman. I take a closer look at how cinematic techniques that are applied to emphasize the different personas, while also providing quotes and examples from the plot. Lastly, I discuss whether these personas align with Barnum’s story. I have come to find that while a lot of the events showcased may be similar, the character in the film is created to fit the Hollywood-narrative rather than portray an historically accurate representation of P. T. Barnum.
